Our Services
Scientific Editing
Scientific editing—also known as developmental editing—is a high-quality, in-depth, and substantive editing service that extends beyond basic language and copy editing to improve overarching issues such as overall focus, clarity, organization, and logical flow. Our expert, Nature-standard, PhD-level scientific editors will provide constructive and critical feedback on key aspects such as the strength of the main argument, logical consistency between the results and conclusions, and potential shortcomings and inconsistencies in presentation. We will also clearly flag issues that we believe may arise during peer review so they can be addressed prior to submission. By anticipating and improving the experience of the reader, reviewers and editors included, we maximize the impact of your research and increase your chances of a successful outcome.
How does it work?
After an initial meeting, we will rapidly familiarize ourselves with your research and take in the bird’s-eye view of your ‘story’. We make edits directly in the text—at times extensively—to transform your document into the highest quality version. Revisions are thoroughly explained using comments within the document, both to clarify our rationale for changes and to help you improve as a technical writer. We can also help you improve or develop display items where necessary to illustrate and conceptualize key processes. Based on our extensive experience, developmental editing takes 3–4 hours per 1000 words (excluding references). Over the years, this service has evolved from a unilateral process from editor to author into a collaborative process between our team and yours, where our combined input produces a product greater than the sum of its parts.
When is this service appropriate?
This service is appropriate for projects that have already been substantially written. Scientific editing by our team adds a tremendous amount of value to your project, whether your goal is publication in a peer-reviewed journal, a submission-ready textbook with eye-catching figures, or obtaining grant funding. Scientific editing is also appropriate for myriad other technical documents in which clarity, flow, organization, and consistency are of paramount importance.
